The crime novel "The judge and the executioner" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, is about solving a murder.
Ulrich Smith, a police lieutenant in the city of Bern, is found shot dead by a village policeman in his car. The case is transferred to Komissär Barlach, but since he is already old and very ill, he gets a partner named Tschanz, which he chose himself.
Barlach found a revolver bullet in their investigations at the scene, which is part of release of the murderer. They also find out that S. Ulrich took often part in these events as a guest of a man named Gastmann. Since they are hoping to find out more, they go to Gstmann's residence and a guest sneaks around the house. The two policemen separate and Barlach is attacked by Gastmann's dog, Tschanz shoots shortly thereafter. Later Barlach collects unnoticed by others the revolver bullet, which is identical to the one found at the crime scene and allows the suspicion that Tschanz is the killer. Nevertheless, he makes him believe that his old enemy Gastmann is suspicious.
Several years ago, when they first met, Barlach and Gastmann joined a bet, saying that Barlach would never be able to clear up one of Gastmann’s crimes. If you want to know more about the story you have to read it by yourself.
